In response to patent law reforms, The Daily Beast recently studied patent applications to rank the most inventive cities in America. While California was the leader with the most cities named in the rankings, North Carolina came in second with three cities making the list.

It comes as no surprise that the urban centers for ingenuity in North Carolina are clustered in a location already known for innovation and success—Research Triangle Park.

Coming in at number five and beating out five of California’s nine cities on the list was Cary. Located in the heart of the Triangle, Cary is a thriving community nestled between Raleigh and the renowned Research Triangle Park. It continually ranks as one of the top 20 safest large cities nationally and the safest in the Southeast.

Placing number 16 on the list was Durham, touted as the City of Medicine. Also widely known as the Bull City, Durham is home to the America Tobacco Campus. This national historic landmark incorporates offices, restaurants, retail, meeting spaces, on-site parking garage and residences and includes a courtyard with an amphitheater and quarter-mile long cascading waterway.

Ranking number 19 on the list was Raleigh. The capital city is also Bloomberg Businessweek’s current number one pick for America’s Best City.

Research Triangle Park is home to more than 170 global companies that foster a culture of scientific advancement and competitive excellence. It is situated between three major universities: Duke University in Durham, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Triangle area repeatedly has ranked among the top regions in the country to live, work, start a business, raise a family and retire.
