Study recognizes North Carolina’s economic development success.

North Carolina was the fourth most successful state in 2010 for economic development, according to results just released in the May 2011 issue of Site Selection magazine. This was the fourth time in the last five years that North Carolina has ranked in the top five states for Site Selection’s Competitiveness Award. North Carolina won top honors in 2005.

According to the magazine's publisher, Conway Data Inc., Site Selection’s Competitiveness Award “recognizes excellence on the part of a state-level economic development group, and its Top Economic Development Groups of 2010.” States were judged on a 10-factor index derived primarily from Conway Data Inc.’s database of new and expanded facilities.

North Carolina received honorable mention awards for Siemens Energy’s expansion in Charlotte and Caterpillar’s new production facility in Winston-Salem.

In addition to North Carolina’s economic development accolade, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Charlotte Regional Partnership and Davidson County Economic Development Commision each received awards for Site Selection’s “Top Economic Development Groups of 2010.” Local economic development groups were ranked according to new jobs, new jobs per 10,000 residents, new investment amount and new investment per 10,000 residents, along with scoring for leadership, innovation and customer service.

"If overcoming adversity is the path to success in economic development, then the Top Groups of 2010 wrote the book on it," said Ron Starner, general manager of Conway Data and author of the report. "What these groups have in common is a commitment to the long, arduous task of pursuing the fundamentals of sound economic development, and they are willing to invest considerable resources to get the job done."
